Tommy and Lucy's Sunset Maternity Shoot in Innerleithen

Tommy and Lucy’s maternity shoot happened in the hills above Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders, and it wasn’t planned. The golden light snuck over the hills one evening and I knew we had to get out while it lasted. Lucy was 32 weeks, so we headed straight up into the hills with the sun going down behind them.
A spontaneous sunset in the Borders hills
No studio, no set-up, no stiff poses. Tommy and Lucy walked hand in hand, shared laughs and hugs, and Lucy’s dress danced in the wind. Shooting straight into a low, bright sunset is a pain technically, but it’s the light that makes these, so you lean into it.
A wee twist on maternity photos
This is maternity photography the way I’d rather do it: relaxed, outdoors, in a place that means something, with a couple just being themselves rather than performing for a camera. Lucy oozed powerful baby mama.
We finished by popping some fizz and watching the sunset hide behind the tops of the hills.
If you’d rather have your maternity photos on a hillside at sunset than in a studio, I’m in the Borders and I’m up for it.
