Caroline and Connaire's relaxed barn wedding at Cormiston Farm, Biggar

Caroline & Connaire · Cormiston Farm, Biggar

Caroline and Connaire got married at Cormiston Farm, a family-run, sole use barn wedding venue in Biggar, on the edge of the Scottish Borders and under an hour from Edinburgh. An outdoor humanist ceremony, a long drinks reception with loads of food, dinner and speeches in the barn, and a dance floor that took its time and then properly delivered. Relaxed, outdoorsy and up for anything. When they first got in touch, I knew straight away they were my kind of couple.

Waterproofs on at St Mary’s Loch

We actually met before their wedding for a pre wedding shoot at St Mary’s Loch in the Scottish Borders, in what can only be described as wild Scottish weather. Freezing cold, torrential rain, strong winds, even snow on the ground.

I asked if they still wanted to go ahead, and without hesitation, they said yes. Waterproofs on, straight out into it.

We ended up making some incredible photos, including attempting to light a fire in the rain using a blanket to shield the matches. It was chaotic, cold, and brilliant, and it told me everything I needed to know about them.

Why Cormiston Farm is the best sole use barn wedding venue within an hour of Edinburgh

Cormiston Farm is easily one of my favourite wedding venues in Scotland, and one that more couples should know about.

It’s tucked away in Biggar, right on the edge of the Scottish Borders and within easy reach of Edinburgh. If you want a barn wedding venue near Edinburgh that still feels like proper countryside, this is one of the best options out there.

It’s family run, and that makes a huge difference. There’s a warmth and flexibility to it that you just don’t get at larger, more commercial venues.

What makes it stand out is how much it packs into one place. The house on site for getting ready. An outdoor ceremony space looking out over rolling countryside. A courtyard for drinks. A rustic barn that works for dinner, speeches and a packed dance floor later on. And loads of spots for photos, from the walled garden to the surrounding fields, without ever needing to leave.

An outdoor humanist ceremony and a long, slow drinks reception

Caroline and Connaire’s day made the most of all of it.

Their outdoor humanist ceremony was personal and full of storytelling. Then came a long, relaxed drinks reception with loads of food and plenty of time to actually spend with their guests.

They prioritised this from the start, and it made a huge difference. So many wedding days feel rushed. This one didn’t. They had time to talk to people, time to take it all in, and time to actually enjoy being married.

Five minutes here, ten minutes there, and Connaire’s Mini Moke

One of the biggest advantages of getting married at Cormiston Farm is that you don’t need to disappear for hours to get the photos. Everything is right there.

We took five minutes here, ten minutes there, and they never felt like they were missing their own wedding.

We still made some really special images, including photos with Connaire’s Mini Moke, his first car, which he restored with his granddad. One of the most personal things at the whole wedding, and such a great addition to their photos.

That balance is exactly what I’m after. Natural, relaxed photos that fit into your day, not take you away from it.

A packed dance floor in the barn

The day flowed into the barn for dinner and speeches, before an evening that built into a seriously good dance floor.

This is one of the reasons I love barn wedding venues like Cormiston Farm. Once everyone is inside, the atmosphere just works.

I always stay well into the evening, because the best dance floor photos never happen in the first ten minutes. They happen later, when people have relaxed, the music kicks in and the energy really builds.

Caroline and Connaire’s wedding absolutely delivered on that.

In their words

“My husband and I are both quite awkward so were a bit worried about how we would be in front of the camera, but Adam made us feel so comfortable that taking the photos ended up being one of my favourite parts of the day.”
