Heather and Charlie's Small January Wedding at Neidpath Castle, Peebles

Heather & Charlie at Neidpath Castle, Peebles
Heather & Charlie · Neidpath Castle, Peebles

On a cold and crisp January day, Heather and Charlie got married at Neidpath Castle, a 750-year-old castle standing high above the River Tweed just outside Peebles in the Scottish Borders. A relaxed and personal ceremony with a few of their closest family and friends, then a trip along the road to Innerleithen’s newest craft brewery, Durty Brewing, for a lively and boozy reception.

These two are the sort of couple you meet and immediately feel like you’ve known for a lifetime. All round good eggs.

The most authentic Scottish castle wedding venue there is

As a wedding photographer based in the Scottish Borders, near Peebles, I get to work in a lot of Scottish castles, and the one thing we do better here than anywhere else in the world is a castle wedding.

Neidpath Castle is by far one of the most authentic. Built over 750 years ago, it stands tall looking out over the Peeblesshire trees, the River Tweed and the town of Peebles. Half in ruins, with low ceilings and raging fireplaces inside. Worn and steep (like, really steep) spiral staircases, crumbling walls and small windows. It is the definition of what people picture when they dream of getting married in Scotland.

If you’re coming over from America with Scottish heritage and you want a proper Scottish castle wedding, this is the place.

A small ceremony, happy tears and a confetti throw

The morning was calm, with everyone getting ready in the castle. The ceremony was personal, the tears were the happy kind, and the confetti throw outside afterwards got everyone laughing again.

A wee adventure, then beers at Durty Brewing

After the ceremony Heather, Charlie and I went on a wee adventure nearby, around the castle and over to Innerleithen, before joining everyone at Durty Brewing. Beers flowing, speeches that had the whole room in tears, and a taproom that suited these two far better than a function suite would have.

A castle in January and a brewery to finish. That’s the Borders done properly.
